A Year in Liberia

Welcome to my blog! I am serving as an Episcopal missionary in the Young Adult Service Corps, and will be at Cuttington University College in Liberia, West Africa from Sept. 2006 - Sept. 2007. This blog will (hopefully) keep you updated on my experiences.

Long overdue posting from Liberia

Well hello everyone. I apologize to those of you who have been checking this blog for updates since I left the states. So many of you lovely people have emailed me that my very limited internet time has been spent reading and responding to emails. Anyway, I am now at a restaurant in Monrovia which has wireless internet access so I can write a quick note.

We got off to a bit of a rough start but things are looking up. We landed in Liberia two weeks ago and due to a miscommunication the person we thought would meet us at the airport was not there. We got a cab to take us into the city, but we hit a huge pot hole and lost two tires! Of course there was only one spare so we and our luggage had to sit in the cab in the torrential rain until another car came. We finally arrived at the Lutheran guest house in Monrovia, where we had been told we would have reservations, only to discover that we in fact did not. But they were very gracious and put us up for the night anyway. The next day we made our way up to Cuttington.

It's incredibly beautiful at Cuttington, and the people have been overwhelmingly welcoming and hospitable. We are beginning to feel at home. I have begun orienting at Phebe Hospital, where I will be supervising Cuttington's nursing students during their clinical rotations. Wow, I'll be on a high learning curve for awhile! Well, the restaurant is about to close so I have to go for now but I hope to post more soon. I hope all is well with everyone!

Hey Mary,
I'm glad to hear that things are looking up. I had no idea that you don't have running water. That's a tough stretch (and gruesome explanation as to why). You are in my prayers. I'll be writing again soon.

Andrew
